General Information
Smoke Grenades are a type of hand grenade that create a physical cloud of smoke when they activate. This smoke cloud significantly reduces visibility. Players inside the cloud are only able to see objects within a short radius of approximately two meters. From the outside it is impossible to look through the cloud directly to the other side of the cloud. The edges of the cloud are more transparent, making it slightly easier to see through these areas.
FLIR and other thermal optics are able to see players through smoke — not objects or terrain — highlighted in bright white. Players should therefore be mindful of vehicles with thermal vision such as tanks and helicopters. There are four types of throwable smoke grenades; blue, green, red and white. These relate to the color of smoke emitted. Aside from this visual difference, all of them function in the same way. To activate the Smoke Grenade, a user is required to throw the grenade and wait a few seconds until the smoke cloud appears.
Usage & Tips
Smoke Grenades act as temporary, visual cover for players to deploy at their own discretion. This has a multitude of applications. It can block off sightlines, providing brief concealment for tactical advances on enemy controlled areas or conversely, tactical retreats to behind friendly lines. Its visual cover also allows players to retrieve downed players to revive in safer locations.
Users should still bare in mind it is only visual cover—it does not provide physical protection. When deploying a smoke grenade, one should aim to seek a safer location when under enemy fire. Wiser opponents will continue shooting through the smoke clouds and those with FLIR optics will also be able to see players through smoke. Utilising the FLIR optic with smoke grenades can work as part of an area-denial loadout, particularly when paired with the Support Class's Ammo Crate resupplies.
Conclusion
Smoke grenades are a useful addition to any loadout, providing a tactical advantage in combat. Its lack of lethality is off putting for some, but it still remains a worthwhile equipment option.
