Usage & Tips

The SG550 is relatively versatile, thanks to its good controllability and average key statistics. Its close to medium range performance is on par with the M4A1 and AK74 but additionally benefits from its faster reload speed. Its low recoil aids greatly it in medium-range combat. Its primary let down is its damage figures. It will increase to a five-shot kill earlier than other automatic rifles. Users may find its effectiveness at ranges past 150 meters will decrease more rapidly as a result.

The SG550 is best used at medium ranges, outside the ranges of SMGs but in a range bracket that preserves its lethality over LMGs or higher-damage weapons.

History

The SIG SG 550 is an assault rifle designed and manufactured by Swiss arms producer SIG Sauer AG. It was developed in response to the Swiss Armed Forces' request in 1978 for a new rifle to replace its Stgw 57 (German: Sturmgewehr 57) battle rifle. SIG submitted its SG 541 prototype for testing, derived from its earlier SG 540 assault rifle. Its main rival was the W+F C42 rifle, made by W+F Bern. Both were designed to also test the new 5.6×45mm Gw Pat 90 cartridge — the Swiss equivalent of the 5.56×45mm NATO round — and 6.45×48mm GP 80 round.[1]

After years of testing, the Swiss Army selected the 5.6mm caliber in 1981, and in early 1983 confirmed it would adopt the SIG design as its standard-issue rifle. However, production of the rifle was delayed until 1986 due to budget limitations. Its introduction into service would subsequently be delayed to 1990, hence its Swiss Army designation as the Stgw 90.[2] SIG would update their own designation to the SG 550 in 1984.[1] The SG 550 has numerous variants produced, notably the 552 Commando carbine variant released in 1988.[3]

Trivia

  • Whilst the 5.6mm round is technically different to 5.56×45mm NATO, they are entirely interchangeable with the SG 550.
